CUCUMBER

WOW!!!!!!! Harvest time again!!!!! This time we harvest cucumber... I guess almost everyone knows what cucumber is.... This is brief introduction of it...

The cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around ribbing with thin, spiraling tendrils. The plant has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit.

The fruit is roughly cylindrical, elongated, with tapered ends, and may be as large as 60 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. Cucumbers grown to be eaten fresh (called slicers) and those intended for pickling (called picklers) are similar. Cucumbers are mainly eaten in the unripe green form. The ripe yellow form normally becomes too bitter and sour. Cucumbers are usually over 90% water.

Although we harvest many cucumber but at the moment, the market price is quite cheap... only 40 cent per Kg.. usually it is not like that. The reason for such a cheap price is due to "flooding of cucumber" in the market... and competitive is very very high.

Below are the packing of the cucumber before send to the market. It is separate into Type A; Type B... Type A category is belongs to those with its appearance straight, elongated and look beautiful and smaller in size... while Type B .. can be varies with size and sometimes appear bigger.

Pumpkin

The word pumpkin originates from the word pepon, which is Greek for “large melon". The French adapted this word to pompon, which the British changed to pumpion and later American colonists changed that to the word we use today, "pumpkin"

Unbelievable, I saw this pumpkin in the market where my mom used to sell her vegetables and fruits. At first, I thought it was import or my mom bought it from others. Then, my mom told me that it come from our farm when I was doing my attachment di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I take few photos of it... and luckily my brother snap few photos of it when the pumpkin attached to it stalk..

Pokok Cempedak

Cempedak, the smaller cousin of the well-known, jackfruit. It adopts the Malay name as it does not have an English name. It is a seasonal fruit native to southeast Asia.

Cempedak looks similar to the jackfruit except that it is much smaller in size but it is large in comparison to other fruits. It is also sweeter, stickier and with a strong odor when it is ripe. You will know when it is ripe as it will emit a strong odor that fills the room, similar to the durian. It will turn light green with dark brown spots appearing on several of the flattened studs. It is also slightly sticky when you touch it due to the secretion of latex through the rind.

Common Name: Cempedak
Vernacular Name: Chempedak
Scientific Name: Artocarpus champeden
